JD Walter Biography
JD Walter is a jazz singers’ singer – a purist and an innovator. Although his style has been compared to many vocal titans, it is uniquely his own and he has become a singular phenomenon on the music scene. Respected and lauded by the great musicians of the contemporary circuit, JD has shared the stage with many legendary artists including: Dave Liebman, Tom Harrell, Bob Dorough, Billy Hart, Nicholas Payton, Jean-Michel Pilc, Bill Evans, John Benitez, Mark Murphy, Greg Hutchinson, Ari Hoenig, Randy Brecker, Tim Warfield, Jim Ridl, Taurus Mateen, Orrin Evans, Andre Kondokov, Seamus Blake and Craig Handy. JD sang with the renowned "American Boychoir" and later attended the University of North Texas via a vocal jazz scholarship.
JD has currently recorded six CD's. "Sirens in the C-House" (Encounter/Dreambox Media Records ‘00) brought him much critical acclaim. His second CD, the innovative and experimental “Clear Day” (Doubletime Records ‘01), was a collaboration with master musician Dave Liebman. He followed up with “Dedicated to You” with the Steve Rudolph trio (PACT records ‘04), “2Bass, a Face and a Little Skin” (Encounter/Dreambox media Records ‘06) and two self-released offerings: “Live in Portugal” (JWal Records ‘08) and “Live at the 55Bar” (JWal Records/55jazz LLC ‘09). JD’s releases have helped expand his listening audience from the shores of America to Europe, Russia and the Far East. He has been a guest artist on many CD's and is also a member of pianist Orrin Evans Luvpark band, with two releases on Imani Records (‘04, ‘07), as well as performing three songs on trumpeter Sean Jones’ latest release "Kaleidoscope" on Mack Avenue Records.
JD has been a featured artist at countless American jazz festivals and clubs, performed at numerous festivals in Europe, the Middle East, Central America and toured Russia 30 times, performing in over 100 cities.
JD is a regular on the music scene in New York having headlined at such venues as Lincoln Center, The Jazz Standard, The Blue Note, The Jazz Gallery, Joe's Pub, The Tribeca Performing Arts Center, Sweet Rhythm and Smoke, and can be seen frequently at the famed 55 Bar. He currently resides in New York City, teaches at The Aaron Copland School of Music, The New School, City College of NY, Long Island University and The Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen, Holland.
